There are so many times I wish I’d had the
gumption to politely excuse myself from dates that had gone
completely south (like that time I ended up going out for drinks
with a man who turned out to be a Holocaust denier. #truestory).
However, walking away is easier said than done. As North Americans,
we’re raised in a culture that values manners and likability over
forthrightness. I never really noticed this until my friends, who
had grown up in Germany, pointed out North Americans “were overly
polite and smiled so much it was almost creepy.” Consequently, none
of my German girlfriends are afraid to be bluntly honest – about
Most of us remember the first time someone
bought us flowers for no apparent reason or surprised us with a
homemade meal – because it made us feel special.
If you’re looking to improve your dating life in the coming years
(and boost your own well being in the process), here’s something to
try: small random acts of kindness.
While having a good sense of humour is
definitely an asset in the online dating world, there are some
topics you should never joke about on a first date. Just ask the guy

just online to lurk, badger and waste everyone’s time. Trolls are by
far one of – if not the – biggest pitfall to online dating. They’re
annoying, disruptive and will go to any lengths to be hurtful and
cause psychological duress. Just ask the woman who unfortunately
experienced a totally obnoxious man who swiped right just to call
her fat. Ugh.
It’s a fact of life that we want our friends
to like who we are dating. In many cases, as in mine, your friends
know you better than you know yourself. It is for this reason, I
value my friends’ opinions. So, when they don’t like someone I’m
dating, it makes me question; Am I missing a key sign that this
person is not right for me? What are they seeing that I’m missing?
There are very few things that can be as
anxiety provoking as first dates, especially when you’re meeting
someone with whom you have only had online interaction. You want to
make a good first impression appearance wise, and with your
personality – or, at least, that should be the goal.
